Crochet and Knitting Instruction

Classes in Northern Virginia/Washington DC

crochetclass websizeGeneral Information

In my home Northern Virginia/Washington DC area, I regularly teach beginning and intermediate crochet throughout the year, so there's always a class going on.  These are group sessions. See below for date/times.

I also offer private lessons for those who want them. Less regularly, I offer occasional classes in continental knitting; special weekend courses, and workshops.  These will be announced on this page.

New Meeting Place: Beginning on August 9, 2016, classes are being held at Knox Presbyterian Church, 7416 Arlington Boulevard (corner of Allen Street and Rte 50), Falls Church. The church is on the opposite side of Rte 50 from Loehmann's Plaza.  There’s a stop light at Allen St., so it will be easy to get in and out. There’s a big parking lot in back of the church; enter by the ground-level door facing the parking lot.

New Hours:  Beginning the same date, both Aylin and I will be teaching our classes at the same new time:  10:30 AM - 12:30 PM on Tuesdays.

New Way to Pay:  Fees for my classes remain payable to me directly by cash or check.  The price is the same -- $80 for four class  sessions.  But with a twist:  When you pay, you have 8 weeks from the date of payment to complete four class sessions without forfeiting a class.  Once you have attended four within that 8-week window, you pay for another four. In any case, once the 8 weeks passes you will then owe a new four-week fee (again, with 8 weeks to use it).  Aylin developed this plan to help alleviate the problem of forfeited lessons when you have to miss a class or two due to other activities. We hope youi'll like the added flexibility.

Here are the dates for our sessions going forward:

Beginning/Intermediate Crochet Classes -  TUESDAY 10:30 - AM - 12:30 PM

New students may start at any point.  Beginners please bring one ball or skein of smooth worsted weight yarn in a light or bright color; a crochet hook (size I-9, or 5.5mm; small scissors, a ruler; and locking stitch markers.

$80 for any four sessions attended within 8 weeks.  Current dates are:

     July 18 (no other class in July);

     August 8, 15, 22, 29

     September 5, 12, 26

     October 3, 24, 31

     November 7, 14, 21, 28

     December 5, 12, 19

Sorry about the gaps - I have considerable travel this summer.

Private Lessons

Just want a refresher?  Need help with a specific project?  Or don't feel like a group just yet?   I can offer private sessions by mutual agreement.  $35 per hour.

Aran Crochet I (F107) - Friday, July 28  SOLD OUT

Using front and back post stitches, learn to crochet beautiful cable stitch patterns that will allow you to make items that look like Irish fisherman knits. Find out how to make your cables really stand out and how to keep track of your cable stitches. We will cover basic cable stitches, twists, and crosses to make such stunning patterns as horseshoes, honeycomb, offset, and winding cables. For those who don't enjoy working with post stitches, we will also cover two stitches that produce cable look-alike patterns. A few favorite background stitches used in Aran designs are also included in the handout. Applicable to CGOA Masters of Advanced Crochet Stitches and Techniques.

PULAD Color Method (F207) - Friday, July 28  SOLD OUT

Learn a large number of fascinating crochet stitch patterns that allow you to work 1 row each in 2 colors without cutting your yarn. Detailed handout includes vertical stripes, bamboo stitch, 2-color checkers, dotted puffs, outlined shells, and lots more. Easy and fun to do, this technique will expand your stitch repertoire by leaps and bounds.

Aran II (S107) - Saturday, July 29

Once you have mastered basic crocheted cables, you are ready to move on to more complex braided cable patterns and traveling stitches. Learn how to make fascinating Celtic Knots, Tree of Life, Elongated Ovals, Cabled Lattice, small diamonds, and braids that "weave” two or more cables together. We will also discuss how to design your own Aran projects. Applicable to CGOA Masters of Advanced Crochet Stitches and Techniques.

Continental Knitting for Crocheters (S207) - Saturday, July 29
For crocheters, who are already accustomed to holding the yarn in their left hand, and who have perhaps struggled in trying to learn American/British style knitting, continental knitting is a natural. This workshop is for real beginners – not for established knitters. Students will learn holding the yarn and needles, casting on, knit stitch, purl stitch, increasing and decreasing, and binding off. Time permitting, we will cover knitting language and charts, fixing mistakes, and a few easy stitch patterns.
